It is costumery to see it as keeping the name of the ancient Jewish town of Sikhnin (also known as Sikhniya, Kefar Sikhni and Kefar Sigana). According to local tradition the current town was established during the reign of the Caliph Omar (634-644). Local Council since 1965 and Municipality since 1995.
