The municipality of Đelekovec is located some 10 km north of Koprivnica. It has around 1,800 inhabitants, some 1,400 in the town of the same name. Former spelling gives it as Gjelekovac and Đelekovac.
In the feudal system, Đelekovec had a status of an independent community with obligation of paying tax to the feudal lord and to serve in his banderium (military unit) in wartime. In Đelekovec was in 1887 born the Croatian writer Mihovil Pavlek Miškina. He was member of Parliament from the Croatian Peasant's Party (HSS), leader of its "left wing"; during the Second World War, he supported the partisans' resistance and was killed in the Jasenovac concentration camp in 1942. Incidentally, some other prominent supporters of HSS in the interbellum period are from Đelekovec as well: the painter Mirko Virius, the author Mara Matocec and the physician Pavle Tomašić.

The symbols of Đelekovec are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Đelekovec, adopted on 25 July 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 27 October 2006 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 10.
The current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Đelekovec, adopted on 30 June 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 15 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 9, include a description of the symbols.
The symbol were presented in August 2004 a solemn session of the Municipality Assembly (Glas Podravine, 12 August 2004).
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms is "Azure on a mount vert a soldier stantant with a blouse gules, trousers of the first and boots or holding in his dexter raised a sabre argent handled or and in his sinister a Turkish head couped".
Antonio Grgić, of the Pikant Marketing company, is the author of the artistic rendition based on the historic coat of arms. This originates from a seal from ca. 1820 which was colored in Laszowski's Grbovi Jugoslavije [lsv39]. As confirmed by D. Ernečić, there was certain opposition in the municipality to readopt this historic coat of arms, deemed "cruel", for the modern municipality.
